Blackbird Pond (BbP) is bunch of rump-shacking, solid stomp, alternative-country-rockers from southeastern Virginia. Blackbird Pond members are Jim Stoker (guitar, vocals), Luisa-Mari Gonzales (vocals, cowbells), Sam Nacman (drums), and John Lozano (bass).
The band formed when they decided that they needed extra spice in their lives. They needed something more than the 9 to 5 workday, and Sam was just plain tired of making donuts early in the morning everyday! So, with a trip to a Goodwill shop for their instruments, they decided to form a band that would bring excitement and escape for them.
Fans, media outlets, industry analysts and peers have compared BbP rock-based sound to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Lynard Skynard, the Doors and the Rolling Stones, while amalgamating it with the: country rock feel of Credence Clearwater Revival, blues/soul/R&B styling of Nina Simone, and strong contralto vocals of Tina Turner. Additionally, their approach to song-writing has been matched up to contemporary artists such as the White Strips, Nickelback, Garth Brooks and Coldplay. An industry insider even called them the “rock-version of the Black-Eye Peas.”
BbP is also known for their preppy “Polo” style attire, high-energy numbers, and – depending on who is singing lead – soulful feminine and powerful masculine ballads. They are possibly the only alternative rock/pop band who – in the words of frontman Jim Stoker on their performance of the fan-favorite a cappella So In Love With You – “can hold a Gibson SG guitar and perform an original a cappella while our drummer stands on his stool to attack his drums like a mad cougar; soon comes salty, sultry-sophisticated vocals”.
Blackbird Pond’s songs have crossed-over to different genres and demographics. Their soulful/bluesy song Brown Bag was voted “All That” by fans and Roll Daddy received positive reviews on, respectively, popular top-40 pop and R&B stations. In addition, the power ballad Sunday Afternoon has been featured on National Public Radio. Blackbird Pond broadcast influence is world-wide since their songs have played in Top 40 U.S. markets, European countries and the Philippines.
Nationally and internationally, mainstream media, music organizations and the public have all given BbP rave reviews. Over the years, the band has been awarded music nominations and recognized for their contributions for supporting many national-based charity organizations, including the 9/11 Fund for the American Red Cross, Operation Smile, American Cancer Society and Stand for Children.
Currently, Blackbird Pond recently completed their third CD entitled www.blackbirdpond.com – Vol. III and music video Sexy Conversation. The band plans to continue their tour and take on new projects.
