After living out of his car for a year, couch surfing, and working as a street performer on the Venice boardwalk in Santa Monica to get in touch with what is real, Lukas Nelson took his western, reggae, and rock influences and combined them with his undoubtedly inherited musical talent to create Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real.
Lukas was raised in the music industry being the son of prominent and celebrated performer Willie Nelson. His first music memory is being onstage with such superstars as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and his father and even took his first steps on Willie’s tour bus, the Honeysuckle Rose.
“I kind of knew at that early age that I wanted to play music. It was the only thing that really made me happy," said Nelson.
The Southern-folk-rock group Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, released their full-length self-named debut CD Promise of the Real December 21, 2010. The album took a year to write and was recorded in Austin, Texas during the winter and fall of 2010. It was produced by Lukas and band members LoGerfo, Melgar, and former bassist John Avila. The album features nine original tracks, including the kick-off track and first single "Four Letter Word" and the surf rock jam "Start To Go." It also features unique renditions of some of Lukas’ favorite music: "L.A." by Neil Young, and a mash-up of sorts of two Jimi Hendrix songs, "Pali Gap" and "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)”.
The record is a bit of a family affair with Lukas recording his variation of “Peaceful Solution” a song originally captured by his father and sister Amy Niccore. Willie even contributes backing vocals to “Fathers and Mothers” in which his aunt Bobbie Nelson contributes piano and “The Sound of Your Memory” and dusts off his ol’ guitar, Trigger, on "All the Pretty Horses. His younger brother Micah Nelson is responsible for the artwork in the CD booklet and creator of the band's peace-sign-tree logo. He often paints onstage during the group's live shows, some of which are featured in the CD packaging for Promise of the Real.
It’s Lukas’ country roots and varietal music influence that will attract any bikers, babes, and priests to the stage on Wednesday Aug. 10 to see Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real accompany Greg Allman and the kings of rock, country, and blues Lynyrd Skynyrd to what is guaranteed to be the best party anywhere!
