Detroit hard rockers Pop Evil was named an iTunes “Top New Artist” in 2008. They have continued their march across America and the airwaves and will make a stop on Saturday, Aug. 6 to join fellow Detroit rocker Alice Cooper to celebrate The Legendary Buffalo Chip’s 30th annual Sturgis Rally party.
Here’s a short history to bring our Sturgis bikers and music fans up to speed on this up-and-coming band.
Lead singer Leigh Kakaty found drummer Dylan Allison through a friend. Guitarist Dave Grahs was playing with another band when he was invited to join them and TenFive was born in Grand Rapids, MI.
They played the nightclub circuit, found fans, wrote new songs, performed and repeated the process until they recorded a three-song demo EP that got the attention of long-time Buffalo Chip music favorite Kid Rock’s producer, Al Sutton, who records their “Ready or Not” EP, which contains the title cut, “Somebody Like You” and “Hard Highway.”
“Somebody Like You’ gots significant airplay on area radio. So, Pop Evil will not be new to Michigan rock fans who come to the Chip each year.
Those radio connections helped get the attention of representatives of Pazzo Music, which signed the band to a record deal in 2007. Guitarist Tony Greve and bassist Matt DiRito joined Pop Evil in 2007 and Sutton begins production of their first full-length CD wit Kid Rock guitarist Marlon Young.
Lipstick on the Mirror was released in May of 2008 and the band began touring with Puddle of Mudd, Tesla, Theory of a Deadman, P.O.D. and Saliva.
