STYX

STYX - Tommy Shaw, Lawrence Gowan, James “JY” Young, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips have, since 1999, performed live more than all of the previous years of its career combined.

Two Super-Bowl appearances, Pollstar Box Office chart-topping tours with Journey, Def Leppard, (also scheduled to perform at the Chip this year) Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, two more studio albums with no end in sight, STYX continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time. And The Buffalo Chip is proud to be among those venues.

STYX will play at the Legendary Buffalo Chip on Sunday, Aug. 7 during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Born in a suburban Chicago basement in the early ‘70s, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late 1970s and early 1980s, due, in large part to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads.

Early in their career, Styx's music reflected progressive rockers like Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Moody Blues. This is evident from their first four albums, STYX, STYX II, The Serpent is Rising and Man of Miracles.

A single from their second album, “Lady,” got the attention of rock radio, which propelled STYX to gold status and a new contract with A&M.

The addition of Tommy Shaw changed the success of the band dramatically, with most of their subsequent releases earning at least lplatinum certification,  and spawned such hit singles and classic rock radio standards as "Renegade,"  "Come Sail Away," "Blue Collar Man" and "Fooling Yourself.”

The band’s first release of the '80s was 1981's concept album, Paradise Theater. Paradise Theater was Styx's biggest hit of their career (selling more than three million copies in a three-year period). They became one of the U.S. top rock acts due to such big hit singles as "Too Much Time on My Hands".  Paradise Theater also marked the first time in history a band released four consecutive albums that went triple-platinum.
