This will be my first trip to Sturgis. Any suggestions for day rides would be appreciated.

Wake up. Get on bike. Turn - Left or right, doesn't matter.Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devil's Tower, Deadwood, Spearfish.. Wherever you go, you will find adventure and friends. Just plan on coming back the next year to see what you missed. Most importantly, to see the friends you made.

On your way in, stop anywhere on the routes to Sturgis and pick up a Black Hills map. Every place has them. Everyday you can pick a different area to go. And since you're on the Chip sight and you may be staying at the Chip, you'll meet up with lots of people that can help you pick a route or be able to ride with them. There is never a dull moment.

Come on home to the Chip, where the partyin' begins.

Spearfish caynon is a great ride, along the way you get to stop at Bridal veil falls, then end up in Deadwood. See me in august,

There are hardly any "bad" rides other than being stuck in traffic coming into Sturgis on I-90. Make sure to ride the high plains in Wyoming by taking Hwy 16 west out of Custer, turn north (right)on Hwy 85 and ride up to four corners. Then you can either continue on 85 back into South Dakota or you can go left in Four corners and take Hwy 585 back to Hwy 90.

Another nice ride is take Hwy 79 north the intersection is just a few hundred yards from the entrance to the Chip. Then you can take Hwy 212 to Belle Fourche, take a jog south to Hwy 24 then turn west (right) into Wyoming. Hwy 24 makes a loop around and comes back to Hwy 90 after it circles the Black Hills. This is a nice ride that not many people seem to take.

Obviously, all of the rides which will be on the map you will get are great rides. Also, make sure to ride out of Rapid City east on Hwy 44 and go through the badlands. MAKE SURE that you leave Rapid City with a full tank of gas. There is only one place to buy gas in the next 75 to 80 miles. When you reach the Badlands, make sure to ride through the Badlands Park up the hill so you can overlook the valley. Great View....

Well, that should get you started. Ride Safe! Bruce

If you are coming from VA Beach. Do Mitchell (Corn Palace), Wall, and the Badlands coming in. While in those places pick up the map of the Badlands and Black Hills. It is one page (11" x 17") and will fold up and fit in a pocket. This will show you everything.

When you do Rushmore and Crazy Horse (which you will), include Iron Mountain Highway and Needles Highway. Custer State Park is a great ride by itself. The rides out to Spearfish and Devil's Tower can include the run out 85. So much to see and believe me you won't get it all in the first year. And you will make more and more friends each year. The most important part of the riding is getting back safe. Travel Safe.

It is more what you do and how you do it, than who you do it to.
