Can anyone fill me in on what the traffic is really like getting in and out of sturgis and the campground?

I would like to get out riding during the day, but will I get stuck in traffic getting through town? What's it like at different times of the day?

Also, what is the condition of the alternate routes? How much is paved, how much is gravel, what shape is it in?

Looking to make my first trip up this year.
Thanks

I don't think it's really all that bad. Hit up the free pancakes and coffee and get out early. If you get out late in the morning or afternoon just go past the FTS, go around the bend and take your first left at the stop sign into the neighborhood and wonder through there to the main street (can't remember the name but you'll see what I'm talking about) and get on i90. Or just go straight after the bend and head to a whole bunch of other thing like Deadwood & Custer...those are some super fun road back there

Traffic is always heavy heading back toward and through Sturgis- expect delays. This gets worse in the afternoons and in the evening.

You can get through there without much trouble if you leave a little early in the morning before it starts backing up so bad.

The alternate routes listed on the Chip website are mostly well-maintained gravel roads. If you don't like riding on gravel, you WILL NOT like them. They will save you a lot of time though, and there is almost no traffic on them at all. Easy ride from Rapid City back to the Chip in the afternoon.

Ride Safe!

Thanks for the info

Is that route that goes around the north side over to the town to Whitewood gravel as well? I think its Bighorn Road and Whitewood Valley Road. How is the flow on that route?

Thanks

If you get out early it's easier but it really hasn't been that bad the last couple of years. Get with somebody who knows the shortcuts and you'll be fine. If you do get stuck...hey you're on vacation...enjoy the sound, check out the scantily clad women around you, shoot the shit with the guy next to you and the next thing you know you're through it!
