Willie, if you decide to go via Nebraska, let me know and I'll be glad to give you some potential routes. Nice travelin through here, only drawback for some is Nebraska is a helmut state, if that matters, to some it does, some it doesn't. remmy68@msn.com. Cya at da Chip in August for a cold one and some Jack Black liquid gold Hell yeah! |

I will, thanks, and look forward to having a few beers and JDs etc. I’ve never ridden far without a helmet so any chance I get to do without it would be good- that said I’m not going to let that overly influence my route – if ever I get to making one. What about the I90, although I appreciate it’s the quickest route. I was put off by the route planner when it said; ~ enter I90 and stay on it for 900+ miles. Unless the scenery changes that sounds like not much fun. That said I can’t wait – its cold here in France still –I was out on the bike for the last few days – disappointed about today as the Meteo were predicting very hot and sunny – but no, its cold and cloudy. I hope its good at the weekend. Cheers to all for now WW |

| Once you get out of Chicago I 90 is the fastest way. There are a lot of other highways/byways to take if you have the time. The maps will give you lots of choices. |

Its been 22 C / 72 F here pretty much since my last post, so great biking weather at last, and it looks like its going to be that way for the next week or so. I’m going to Nebraska on the way to Sturgis and may try to fit in a brief visit to other states on the way – I will actually go out of my way to get in a few – just for the sake of it. I was thinking of trying to get in a few extras in both directions - sad, I must have too much time on my hands. I’m still not sure – in general are bikes safe overnight at motels etc, or should I try to find ones with secure parking? Grateful for your thoughts on this. WW |

| Willie W. : I did a 6,000 mile ride out to Sturgis last yr from Fl., Stayed at motels all the way and had no problems. Try to scope out the motel and find a bottom floor room and request it when you check in. I used a Good quality cable lock (lock it to a post or the concrete tire stop for the autos), my ultra classic has an alarm to. I also covered the bike at night. The smaller Mom and Pop motor lodges are great and usually can park the bike right in front of the room with a large picture window. Ask the front desk when you check in if they have extra security and if they've had any problems. Hope this helped and We'll see you at the Chip ! Ride safe! Steve |

Thanks for this info – good stuff, I’ll take this approach on the journey. I think I’m being extra careful as it’s a hired bike. I started thinking about this trip just after Christmas, then I booked the Chip in February and it all still seemed so far away – but now I can’t believe how quick the time has gone. I just need to book my flight and hotel in Chicago for a few nights, then the motels, plan the route, get the house and dogs sorted out etc... then all ready. I hope its going to be worth it, well I'm going to make sure it is. Cheers and see you there for a beer or three. WW |

I’ll be riding from Chicago to Sturgis – taking 2-3 days as I’m in no rush. I don’t like over planning, so don’t want to pre-book motels. Are you usually able to find a room along I 90 or is it best to book? Also any good camp sites along the way - again pref’ those that you don’t need to book. Cheers and beers from WW |

| Willie, I had no trouble finding a motel along 90. Usually there is one close to the gas stops. If you stop early enough in the day they seemed to always have room, but they also seemed to fill up before the night was over. |

Willie: Do a Google search for "KOA campground", They have a listing of the campgrounds along your trip. Ride safe. |

Thanks to all of you – very much appreciate the advice. I set off in less than a week’s time – long journey, from holiday home in SW France to London to Chicago then to the Chip – hope to get to the Chip PM on the 3rd. Looking forward to the rides and the beers and ... and... WW |

Willie- http://www.blackhillsbadlands.com/go.asp?ID=205 Best map of the Black Hills area hands-down. As someone mentioned earlier, you can pick them up anywhere in the hills (and outside the hills, also...) but you can take a look now and plan some rides through the hills before you get there. I second the vote for taking Spearfish Canyon to Deadwood...great drive, great scenery. I also second the vote to ride through Custer State Park. It's a must-see. The Iron Mountain Road with the pigtail bridges are awesome. Take the extra time and do the Wildlife loop through the park--can you imagine having a buffalo not 3 feet away from your bike? A trip through the badlands might be in order, also, and of course you should stop at Wall Drug Store since you're coming out from the east! Free ice water...how can you beat that deal?! Have an awesome time, we'll see ya in VIP mon ami! ~W |
