I am still wondering if anyone has ever used a nextel phone in sturgis - I really don't want to rent a phone while I am there but I need to stay in touch - let me know if anyone has used one

I USED GSM SERVICE ON MY PHONE AND BOUGHT AN ANTENNA BOOSTER THAT WORKED EVERY WHERE EXCEPT IN KEYSTONE HAD A LITTLE TROUBLE FRIEND OF MINE USED HIS NEXTEL ONLY TWICE AND IT SEEMED TO WORK FINE, I USED MINE EVERY DAY TO MAKE SURE MY KIDS WEREN'T BURNIN DOWN THE HOUSE WHILE THE RENTS WERE GONE CHECK WITH YOUR SERVICE CENTER THEY MIGHT HAVE OTHER SUGGESTIONS, THATS WHAT WE DID.

I've got a Nextel, and unless they've put up a tower near by there....no they do not work at the Chip. Or anywhere west of Rapid City for that matter. It's a bummer, so I have a second AT&T phone that works great in that area. Good luck and let us know if you find out different.

Zuess - thanks for the info - I will let you know if I find anything else out - maybe once sprint and nextel phones can work off of the same towers it won't be so bad - I understand by the fall there will be new nextel phones that will work off of the sprint towers - got this from my nextel rep, but what does he know - he couldn't even tell me if they worked in sturgis

Altell has a good nationwide plan that works in most cities and rural areas and works great at the Chip. My ATT/Cingular worked good to fair. Altell is increasing their size towards the Northern areas, also. Good luck.

I buy the phones at Walmart, called the Tracfone, where I can add Cingular minutes. Works great. My NEXTEL SUCKS no matter what I do to try and improve it.

For $25 to $50, depending upon how many minutes you buy, get the Tracfone. You will be very happy with it's service all over the western U.S. Another benefit is that you can make obscene phone calls to your friends and since it is a phone number which can't be tracked back to anyone specific, you can have all kinds of fun.

The Tracfone is also great to use so there is no record of it's use. When you are involved in things where others are constantly watching you very, very closely, (I think they call it survellance) being invisible is very handy if you know what I mean

For "appearance reasons" you can maintain a phone where those watching can see its use and get a copy of its bill. The Tracfone can be used without anyone finding out who you call, when you call them and how long you talked.

By the way, the Tracfone allows you to have two phone numbers, one number in the Sturgis area and one number for back at home. plus, you can use any carriers minutes in the phone, not just Cingular.

I like the Tracfone approach. Look for it at WalMart next to the Camera / film developing departments.
