Café director Shaun Kama is a veteran tattoo artist whose ornate ink patterns have found the skin of celebrities such as Rihanna, Janet Jackson and Jada Pinkett Smith. Kama has organized a tremendously talented crew of artists to do celebrity caliber work on you!
The Tattoo Café is conveniently located in the Buffalo Chip’s main amphitheater to the east of the Roadhouse Deck. It will be open from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. throughout the Sturgis Rally. Now in its sixth year, the Buffalo Chip Tattoo Café has established a reputation at the Sturgis Rally as the place to go for awesome artwork in a sanitary environment.
“Our customers know they can get really kick-ass work on site and not have to worry about the variables that can happen when you are in that environment,” says Kama. “What we’ve established is a health-coded environment that has well-rounded artists who travel all year long during conventions. A lot are shop owners, including myself.”
Kama is excited about what his crew will offer patrons of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “We really pay attention to the clients,” he said. “My mentality as an artist is the same as the other artists because I hand-picked them. We like to get to know the client. In the majority of cases you need to know a little bit about them so you can make something that’s unique to them as an individual rather than just a robot piece.”
During its years at the Buffalo Chip, the Tattoo Café has received major recognition including inclusion on the CMT special “Biker Battles.” So don’t miss the chance to get inked by this group of nationally renowned artists! Immortalize your trip to the Best Party Anywhere™ at the Buffalo Chip Tattoo Café!

Examples of his work:
Shaun Kama was born in Heidelberg, Germany to two parents that served during the Vietnam War. After moving to Albany, NY in his youth, Shaun’s family spent summers in Great Barrington, MA, where his passion for painting began while studying the works of Norman Rockwell at his original gallery. He later moved to Southern California, attending high school in Huntington Beach, where he was commissioned by friends and students for his talents at logo and skateboard design. At age 16, Shaun started playing in his first band, beginning a lifelong love of music and performing. After finishing school, Shaun moved to Los Angeles in the wake of the glam scene, and joined Hello Disaster, an up-and-coming punk band. With his musical career launched, Shaun set off on a new adventure, beginning his apprenticeship with the World Famous Mark Mahoney at the Original Shamrock Studios. His journey into the arts had just begun.
Tattooing for over 15 years, Shaun has found his niche in the tattoo world. His personal tastes as a tattoo artist lead him to the dark and macabre, which led to his reputation as the king of Halloween Tattoos. Shaun’s work is dark and edgy, with incredible detail and vibrant color. He is also skilled in single needle black and grey work, through working alongside Mark Mahoney and Bob Vessels. His artistic influences include Normal Rockwell, Salvador Dali, Boris Vallejo, Bernie Wrightson, Ralph Steadman and Frank Frazetta. He describes himself as a Jack-of-All-Trades with personalization to the tastes of his clients. Shaun also regularly paints, working in acrylics, oils and watercolors. He can often be found doing a variety of commissioned artworks for his clients, and his paintings can be seen at a variety of art events throughout the year.
Throughout his career, Shaun’s love for music has continued, with Shaun serving as the front man for Living End, Damnation, and his current projects, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Lords of the Damned. While tattooing, Shaun is almost always found with a set of headphones on, listening to his trusty iPod. His musical tastes are vast, ranging from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers to Slayer, Otis Redding and Nick Cave to The Highwaymen and Lords of the New Church.
As a regular in the tattoo and horror convention circuit, Shaun has dedicated himself to bringing his art around the country and internationally. He is the driving force and event producer behind the annual Buffalo Chip Tattoo Café in Sturgis, SD. Summer 2015 will be the fifth successful year of this event. Shaun also traveled with Black Veil Brides on the 2013 & 2015 Warped Tour, tattooing across the U.S. and Canada.
In addition to permanent tattoos, Shaun has also created temporary tattoos for commercials, print campaigns and music videos. Many celebrity A-listers have worked with or been tattooed by Shaun, including Rihanna, Jamie King, Janet Jackson, Missy Elliot, Nelly, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sinbad, and Bob Hailey. The list continues to grow as Shaun establishes himself as a tattoo artist to the stars.

Randy stepped into the early 1990s boom of tattooing, coming from the skateboard industry, where he was the team manager and art director of Gullwing Trucks. Randy had gathered knowledge of tattooing from the Los Angeles black and grey scene in the 1980s. He settled in San Diego, where he has been tattooing for the past 25 years.
Randy has traveled throughout the US and Europe tattooing. Starting his professional career out of Avalon Tattoo (1992-2004), a street-custom shop in the beach area. Here he honed his craft for tattooing, becoming skilled at portraits, Asian, color, new school, tribal, bio, and traditional styles of tattooing. If tattooing wasn't enough, Randy spent a lot of his free time painting and showing fine art on a regular basis. After 12 years at Avalon, he went out on his own and opened Inu Tattoo (2004-2008), a one man shop. On his own Randy had more time to work on building and restoring vintage custom motorcycles. From Inu, Randy then created the first tattoo, barber and coffee shop, all under one roof; Two Roses (2008-2013).
Missing the excitement of skateboarding, Randy took up shaping surfboards. Breaking away from his Two Roses partnership, Randy created his best shop ever, El Rey Tattoo & Barber (2013-present). A completely custom shop, decorated with giant tattoo-designs spray canned on the walls, showcasing motorcycles, surfboards, and vintage skateboards, all created by Randy. Randy spends his free time working on his custom surf safari truck and exploring Mexico and the US.
