2nd Annual Baker Drivetrain Burnouts: SMOKING ALLOWED
It didn’t matter if a bobber, chopper, bagger or custom was in the Baker Burnout pit on Friday August 7th because there was just one thing that needed to be accomplished. At the drop of the flag, get the gears in order and push the machine to a fifth gear burnout before the guy or girl! in the next lane. The smoke set in and the fury and fire was put to the rear-tire.
The fiery ceremony took place at the Kinison Playground with hundreds of crazed fans catching wind of the smoke signals that couldn’t be confused for anything but the hottest event in all of Sturgis: the Second Annual Baker Burnout Drags. No hail storm, torrential down pour or fierce bout with mother-nature could keep the show from leaving a few gears in the dust.

The 5th gear burnout race put twelve motorcycle industry junkies into the bracket, racing head-to-head in the steel cage. Mr. Roadside Marty took control of the chaos by calling the first pair of drag racers into the pit where the flag was dropped and the race for fifth began. The loser of the match got nothing but the crowd’s appreciation and put their heads down in shame while the winner of the heat took their bad-ass rubber burning attitude to the next round.
The no-holds barred competition kept spectators on their feet with the Brave Dozen leaving it all on the steel. This year’s competitors were:
-
Bill Dodge: defending Baker Burnout King 2008 – Blings Cycles
-
Jerry Covington – Covington Cycles
-
Athena “Chickie” Ransom – Vagabond Choppers
-
Paul Wideman – Bare Knuckle Choppers
-
Laura Klock – Klock Werks
-
Kevin “Teach” Baas – Baas Metalcraft
-
Bean’re – Biker Gypsy
-
Ken “Wolfey” Wolfe – S&S
-
Pat Patterson – Led Sleds
-
Randy Winchel – Framelock
-
Dar Holdsworth – Brass Balls Bobbers and Choppers
-
John Schope – Sinister Choppers
Bill Dodge, the defending champ, found himself in the Championship Round but had to out-perform Ken Wolfe of S&S to claim the 2009 Baker Burnout Drags Championship. Ken, a last minute entry, made his way through the competition in quick form but met his match with Bill. Experienced as the ’08 Champ, Bill took Ken through three rounds of burnout action before being edged out.

A kick-ass celebration continued in Ken’s honor where Baker awarded him $1000 for the victory. Avon Tyers anteed up new tires and Ethanol Fuels, Indian Motorcycles, New Belgium Brewing and Spectro Oils also had a hand in making the competition one of the best in the books. Congratulations to Baker Drivetrain for their continued success and unparalleled innovation in the drivetrain market. As always, Thanks for the Fun.
