Pink is everywhere this month in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the ribbons, stories, fundraisers and campaigns are spreading the message.
We didn’t wait for October to show our support. The Legendary Buffalo Chip and Black Hills Harley Davidson Turned the Hills Pink on Friday August 7, 2009 with a region wide event supporting local and national efforts to eradicate the disease that has affected too many lives. The first charity ride of its kind celebrated and showcased the camaraderie of motorcyclists. Overall, it was an exciting event; evoking emotion and spirit for women riders everywhere.
Combined contributions helped raise $18,000 during the Sturgis rally for charities that are directly involved with breast cancer awareness and prevention. Our time spent with the Rapid City Regional Hospital Foundation and Keep A Breast Foundation taught us about the disease affects everyone and with technology and improvements in treatment the survival rate is going up. The PinkNProud Riders, Sponsors and Guests came together to show their support for the cause – uniting for a beautiful 50 mile ride, reception and memorabilia auction.
Special Guests made the PinkNProud event a day to remember. Cris Sommers-Simmons, author of The American Motorcycle Girls, shared her stories of early women motorcyclists and brought new light on the ladies that blazed the trails for motorcycling as it is today. Cris’ accomplishments in the industry alone make her an inspiration for the women just learning to ride or taking the road by storm. The PinkNProud Reception had special guest in Gloria Tramontin Struck, a Golden Life Member of the original Motor Maids. Gloria’s rich motorcycling history and 70 plus years of riding made her stories the highlight of the day.
Pulling off a Win
When there’s a free bike to be given away and American Cycle Magazine, Legendary Buffalo Chip and Sucker Punch Sallys have their hands on the contest, you’d best be getting an entry in.
That’s just what Jim from Missouri thought when he picked up a copy of the American Cycle Magazine.
Jim, a motorcycle enthusiast and avid rider, thought the call from Woody was a joke his friends were playing on him. “I didn’t believe what I was hearing. It was 1am and I was on my way home from a day of baseball games and class reunions” Jim said. “It’s just that I never win anything so my reaction was ‘yeah right’”.
Jim took his custom, hot rod bobber home to a driveway full of buddies who were more than impressed with the legendary bike. “Every time I open up the garage door, I have to thank Sucker Punch for such a great build. I have entered it in two bike shows, each where it won 1st place in its category.” We asked what his favorite part about the bike was and he went on to name each and every part, so we summed it up for him – that it’s his. We hope the trophies start to pile up and the story of how you won it never gets old, Congrats Jim on your win.
In case you were wondering – We’re putting our stamp on the 2010 bike giveaway and it’s sure to turn heads just like the 2009 3-way Conspiracy. Stay tuned to the Sturgis Rider News and American Bagger Magazine as the details drop!
