There was a time not so long ago when the late-night smoke plume rising behind the Bikini Beach Stage confused people. From a distance, it looked like the band’s production crew had gone absolutely feral with the fog machines.

Then you got closer and realized the haze wasn’t coming from the stage at all. It was coming from a pack of motorcycles behind it doing rolling burnouts, wheelies, donuts and whatever else sounded like a good idea at midnight.

Over the years, that little patch of asphalt behind Bikini Beach has become one of the wildest after-hours hangouts at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. What started organically as a place where people would mess around after the headliner ended turned into a full-blown spectacle once more stunt riders started camping at the Chip.

One bike turned into five. Five turned into 50. Suddenly, more people were gathering behind the stage than ever before, drawn in by the smell of burning rubber, the scream of rev limiters and the possibility that somebody might make a questionable decision in the coolest way possible.

This was probably inevitable.

After all, this whole place was built by a guy who has never exactly been known for loving rules. Buffalo Chip founder and CEO Rod “Woody” Woodruff’s signature mantra, “Ride Free, Take Risks™,” has shaped the Buffalo Chip experience for decades, and this area feels like one of the purest examples of that philosophy in action. Not reckless chaos. Not a free-for-all. Just enough room for people to be themselves, make memories and occasionally roast a tire into another dimension.

Eventually, the number of riders and spectators grew so much that all this mayhem needed a real home.

Enter Bikini Bottom.

Yes, that’s really the name. A few years back, the Concrete Cowboys started referring to the area as such, and like most nicknames born in the middle of motorcycle chaos, it just stuck.

Frankly, when you’re standing ankle-deep in tire smoke at 1 a.m. watching someone do a rolling burnout while a concert pounds on the other side of the stage, it does kind of feel like you’ve entered a strange underwater universe where normal rules no longer apply. All that’s missing is Patrick Star yelling, “Is mayonnaise an instrument?” while somebody destroys a rear tire nearby.

This year, the Chip took the chaos and gave it structure without killing the spirit that made it special in the first place.

The Buffalo Chip expanded the asphalt behind Bikini Beach to officially create and designate the new Bikini Bottom area. Split rail fencing separates the stunt zone from the RV Camping Area, while concrete barriers separate it from the roadway connecting campers to areas like the South 40 RV Grounds, Camp Easyride and the campsites along Quarter Lane.

Finding Bikini Bottom shouldn’t be difficult. Even if the roar of engines, cheering spectators and giant clouds of tire smoke somehow fail to guide you, the massive neon Bikini Bottom sign floating above the area certainly will. The sign, along with the development of the area itself, was made possible in part through support from HardDrive and Shinko Tires. Because if there’s one place where tires go to die, it’s probably here.

If the official 2026 Buffalo Chip Band Lineup Poster looked particularly rowdy this year, there’s a reason for that. The photo featured on the poster was taken at Bikini Bottom, which feels fitting considering the area may become one of the defining visual backdrops of the 2026 rally.

Of course, this madness at Bikini Bottom isn’t just random anymore. The Chip is also asphalting a new section of CrossRoads free access area and bringing in some of the biggest names in the stunt world throughout the week, and there’s a very good chance many of them are going to wander over and get a little squirrely at Bikini Bottom after hours, too.

Drifting and stunt competitions and shows at Crossroads will include SlydeGP, Drifter Drags, LFG Slow Races, Senders Only, Untamed, Della Crew + Get Vertical and Stunt Warz during the rally. In addition, the Concrete Cowboys will tear up the amphitheater during Daredevil Wednesday. Considering the energy these crews bring everywhere they go, you probably shouldn’t expect them to quietly sip lemonade and head to bed afterward.

The beautiful thing about Bikini Bottom is that it exists alongside everything else happening at Bikini Beach rather than competing with it. While the madness churns behind the stage, live music continues on the Beach Stage after the main concerts let out each night, giving you a soundtrack for the insanity unfolding just beyond it.

Smoke on the water. Fire in the sky. Burnouts behind the stage.

One moment you’re watching a band rip through a midnight set. The next, you’re watching someone attempt a burnout long enough to communicate with extraterrestrial life through smoke signals.

If you want the best view in the house, head up to the viewing deck above the Bikini Beach Stage where you can overlook both the concert action and the mechanical mayhem happening behind it. And if all the excitement leaves you thirsty, the Milagro Cantina is only steps away, serving both the stunt-watchers and concertgoers alike from its vintage Silver Streak trailer.

By the end of the rally, Bikini Bottom will probably produce stories that sound too ridiculous to be true, videos that make people question your judgment and at least one burnout visible from low Earth orbit.

And that’s kind of the point.
