The Party that Couldn’t Be Stopped

Some things in life you can always count like clockwork. Every day the sun will rise. Every month your bills will come due. And every August bikers will flock to the Black Hills of South Dakota and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

During a year when everything became uncertain and so many plans unraveled, riders from around the country intended to stay that course no matter what. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally couldn’t be stopped because there is no official owner of the rally. (Learn more about this controversial reality here.) When news broke in early August that hundreds of thousands of bikers were heading to the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, living rooms across the nation lit up with theories of what this event would look like amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

For Mai Richards, becoming the face of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® for 2020 meant traveling down a road with some unexpected twists and turns. After entering the Buffalo Chip Poster Model Search Presented by Bud Light Seltzer in March, COVID-19 virtually caused the contest’s gears to grind to a halt. It’s safe to say no one was completely certain how things would shake out, including this first-time contestant. But when the model search was able to fire back up in June, Mai was poised and ready to show she had the beauty, brains and personality to stand out from the other 14 worthy finalists and earn the title.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is NOT canceled, and it would never have been canceled even if City of Sturgis had voted to not participate in it on June 15, 2020.

According to a Sturgis.com press release, the reason for this lies in the fact that no one owns the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
